The Power of Association

So much of our lives are governed by the associations we make between one thing and another. We hear a piece of music and it reminds us of our holiday; we taste a particular food and it makes us feel good; we smell incense and it relaxes us…We are constantly building up associations in our minds subconsciously.

We have all been there where we are going about our daily business listening to the radio. Suddenly a piece of music comes on and we are hurtled back to a time and place in our past where we heard that music: there is a change in our mood and we experience either a warm, pleasant feeling or a feeling of melancholy. The music you have heard has, through your sense of hearing, seemingly set off a chain reaction in which memories have been sparked and your mood has changed all in a split second. This is the power of association, and this is just one example of how it can totally consume us.

Similarly smell can spark off certain powerful physical reactions in the body, which, sometimes, we may be partially unaware of. It has been said that the smell of baking bread can sell a house; if you pass a coffee shop in a busy shopping centre you can't help but look across; the smell of fresh flowers in a room will make you sit up and take notice, as will a freshly cut lawn.

We are therefore all aware of what associations are and, loosely, how they work. What we sometimes do not realise perhaps is just how powerful they are and how they can influence our thinking, behaviour, our lives and our whole way of being. The good news is that this 'power' can be be brought under our control and used in a positive way to enhance our lives.

This particular workshop aims to bring that process of association more under our control. If we can learn to create associations at our will, we can arguably train our minds to think in a certain way and our bodies to behave in a specific manner. This is what this workshop is all about – creating these associations.

The workshop is aimed at all those who wish to know more about how we can train our minds and bring our thinking more under our control.

On this workshop you will learn on this 'power of association' session:

  • How to define what we mean by associations, and why they are important
  • To cite examples of associative links
  • To consciously create associative links in the brain
  • To work out a plan of how you can use associative links in your own life
