Confidence & Self-Esteem Building

Confidence and self esteem are terms that we hear about in all walks of life. Those who exude confidence and self esteem seem to have a certain something about them that others just seem to admire from afar.

There is the old debate surrounding whether certain of us are confident by nature (ie we are born confident), with that confidence either being eroded or increased by our experiences, or whether we become confident over time.

Whatever your viewpoint, the characteristics of both confidence and self esteem, like so many areas of personal development, can be learnt. This is because the concepts of these two areas constitute various elements that, when pooled, can be defined as confidence and/or self esteem.

High confidence and self esteem are the bedrock of a fulfilling and contented life, and are areas that many people wish they could master. Confidence is about our capability to achieve, and self esteem is about our self worth, and how highly we view and value ourselves.

Elements of self confidence

  • Decisiveness (of speech, thinking and behaviour)
  • Assertiveness
  • Self assurance
  • Sharpness
  • Poise
  • Ability to manage fear

Elements of self esteem

  • Self respect
  • Pride
  • Dignity
  • Composure
  • Strong self identity

It could be argued that we need to do our utmost to ensure that our experiences are as positive as possible to ensure that our sense of self confidence remains high.

We could also glean that self confidence is about expecting the best. When the best happens our positive expectations are satisfied. From this it could arguably be said that part of low self confidence is expecting the worst. In the same way, when the worst occurs our negative expectations are satisfied. Confidence could therefore be said to be about deciding that you will excel, then behaving as if it is a foregone conclusion.

The workshop will focus on looking at the similarities and differences between these two important areas, and the roles they play in either enriching or limiting our lives. Both of these areas overlap, but are very different.

The aim is for participants to come away armed with a ‘toolbox’ of ways to feel more confident in their everyday lives, hold themselves in high regard and influence the way others see them.

Among delegates who will benefit from this workshop will be those with low confidence and self esteem, and those wishing to maintain and improve on their current level of confidence and self esteem.
